AIC clarify the role of FIAS

Following recent advertisements in the press regarding the quality of fertiliser being delivered to UK farmers, AIC has been asked to clarify the role of FIAS in ensuring the production of safe, secure and legal fertilisers.

About FIAS – Your Assurance of Safe, Secure & Legal Fertiliser

The Fertiliser Industry Assurance Scheme (FIAS), covers fertilisers intended for agriculture, horticulture, forestry, amenity and any other commercial use. As such FIAS is actively supported by The UK government through the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra)

All FIAS fertiliser producers are independently audited annually. Over 230 such audits have been carried out in the last four years alone.

All FIAS audits are performed by a highly qualified, and experienced team managed by PAI-Kiwa, who are UKAS accredited and certified to various EU assurance standards. This ensures that processes and procedures are being followed such that consumers should be able to buy with confidence.

FIAS participants operate to a very high level of compliance and no legal contraventions have been noted by FIAS independent auditors over the last 4 years in the following areas covered by the FIAS production standard.

  • Product integrity and legal conformance is assured

FIAS manufacturers must ensure that production is carried out under controlled conditions to ensure that their production processes ensure that specification and legislative requirements are met and that products are manufactured, inspected and tested to ensure compliance with all legal, company and customer contract requirements.

  • Weights and measures are assured

FIAS manufacturers must make detailed checks to ensure that only properly calibrated equipment is used, so as to ensure compliance with legal and specified product requirements, and that proper records are kept. If any equipment is found to be outside the accuracy tolerance, the company must carry out a proper investigation to put the matter right and ensure all products are legal.

  • Traceability is assured

FIAS manufacturers must identify all raw materials and finished products to ensure proper traceability.

  • Suitability of packaging is assured

FIAS manufacturers must ensure that finished product packaging is suitable for the product.

FIAS is your Assurance of safe, secure and legal fertilisers please only ask for FIAS approved and certified products.
